Since the 1980s, when Renault offered a remote opening system, this idea has evolved into what we now know as Keyless. It is a system that allows opening and closing doors or access controls without a physical key, improving both comfort and security. Various options currently exist: physical credentials, biometrics, or mobile credentials stored on a smartphone.

How does keyless entry work in cars?

For the system to function, a BCM (Body Control Module) is installed in the car, which receives signals from all antennas and connects directly to the vehicle's central computer. Additionally, an RKE Receiver is included to receive radio signals from the remote or smart key. These signals transmit a code picked up by the RKE Receiver for the BCM to process; if the code is correct, the module unlocks the vehicle for full access.

How can a smartphone be used as a digital key?

A smartphone can act as a digital key by emitting short Bluetooth signals. These are picked up by RKE receivers and handled by the BCM, which validates access if the detected code is correct.

Is using a smartphone as a car key secure?

Smartphones have proven to be more secure than other credentials due to the high number of car thefts involving "Relay Attacks". In these cases, thieves intercept and duplicate the radio signals that physical fobs emit continuously.

In contrast, smartphones offer critical advantages:

• Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Technology: This helps accurately determine the distance between the phone and the vehicle.
• Fraud Prevention: By knowing the precise location, it prevents the signal from being maliciously amplified.
